Sustainable palm oil: better for the planet

Many people are confused about what is sustainable palm oil, and how can they tell what palm oil is produced in a sustainable manner. In this article we’ll describe the meaning to you.

What does sustainable mean?

The term ‘sustainable; was originally used to describe oil crops. Today, the industry utilizes the term sustainable to describe both oil crops and plantations, and in the process there is a switch in how palm oil is produced.

Longer chains of plantations

In the case of certified sustainable palm oil, as the industry moves from plantations to peatland, the location of the trees that are planted is changed. This results in longer chains of plantations. By the time the palm oil is finally harvested from the trees, there is a portion that is very carbon intensive, because it has taken so long to grow the trees, and to harvest them. It is the carbon that was stored in the tree that is released when the tree dies. The rest of the product is considered sustainable.

What is the most popular sustainable palm oil?

The most popular organic, sustainable palm oil available today is Canola. This is palm oil with a high concentration of linoleic acid. A significant portion of palm oil is produced from olibanum fruit, which was first cultivated in Indonesia in the late 1700s. Because of the long supply chain for olibanum fruit, palm oil with a high linoleic acid concentration is necessary. The amount of carbon in the product is low and the amount of palm oil that can be used is limited, while preserving the original properties of the oil.

What makes sustainable palm oil different from regular palm oil?

Organic and sustainable palm oil differs from regular palm oil in that it is produced from olibanum fruit trees, and is produced by traditional methods. Palm oil grown organically is grown from fruit bearing trees that have been allowed to mature and bear fruit on their own. Traditionally, this means that the olibanum trees are allowed to grow and bear fruit on their own. There is no chemical assistance. Organic palm oil is also produced using traditional methods. Unlike regular palm oil, this palm oil is not refined or modified in any way.

Is palm oil good or bad for you?

There is no good evidence that palm oil is dangerous for your health. In fact, many who consume it do see positive effects. Palm oil is very high in antioxidants and is particularly high in flavonoids. This means that it is a great substitute for butter or other fatty foods. It is also a natural fat, as it is unprocessed.
